Woowich Arsenal, London

Conversion of ten different Buildings, mostly Listed, involved a mixture of inventive conversion whilst undertaking restorative repairs. THERMOSPAN supplied large amounts of toughened and laminated glass for the Marlborough Building part of the development.

Location: Woolwich Arsenal, Woolwich, London
Architect: A & Q Partnership
Client: Berkeley Homes
Main Contractor: Barretts of Aspley

THERMOSPAN met demanding specifications and tight lead times in supplying toughened glass and other specialist products for the Marlborough Building at Woolwich Arsenal, one of the apartment developments on the historic site being undertaken by Berkeley Homes.

This technically demanding subcontract package was undertaken by Bedfordshire based Barretts of Aspley, working in close liaison with project architects, the A&Q Partnership.

Some parts of the inherited MoD buildings had been so badly altered in operational times that extensive removal of modern adaptions was necessary, with new ranges and link blocks, to best reuse the shell of former buildings.

In some cases key buildings had already been removed, giving the opportunity to construct new, re-establishing the pattern of former quadrangle layouts, in a modern context.
