Roof Glazing

Glass can be used very effectively in roofs to create transparent roof openings, allowing natural light into buildings.

Aspects to consider for overhead glazing are ease of maintenance, controlling solar radiation and safety. All glass panels in glass roofs should be a toughened or laminated safety glass. The internal pane of any overhead glazing should be laminated to prevent the small pieces of glass from falling to ground if a unit breaks.

Glass roof assemblies usually use double or triple glazed units for better thermal insulation. Solar Control glass is also a popular glass solution for roofs, as many roofs are under direct sunlight. Glass with a low maintenance coating to the external glass panel will reduce cleaning requirements.

Glass roof should have a pitch of no less than 5° to allow adequate water run-off and to stop pooling of rainwater on glass surfaces.
